Guitar Hero Air Guitar Rocker Now Widely Available

May 6th, 2008

Over here at Gearlog headquarters, we've been intrigued by Jada's Guitar Hero Air Guitar Rocker since the company first busted it out back at CES. While the device officially launched back in February, its availability has been fairly limited--well, as limited as something that's widely available online can be.

If you've been waiting for the full nationwide rollout to get your hands on this guy, it looks like you're finally in luck. Guitar Hero Air Guitar Rocker is available today through all the major retail channels, including Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy, and Toys ...

March 21st, 2008

guitarherologo.jpgWhen Activision announced Guitar Hero on Tour for the Nintendo DS, it seemed like the popular video game series had finally saturated every aspect of popular culture. Maybe the jump to portable gaming consoles doesn't seem that big a jump, but since its first iteration, Guitar Hero has seeped into our lives through some surprising conduits: from South Park episodes to Bill Gates's final CES keynote.

In fact, if you're a big enough fan, you can conceivably incorporate Guitar Hero into nearly every waking moment--in fact, why not pick up a ...

Web Video Now Accessible Through TiVo

March 18th, 2008

tivologo.jpgTiVo first announced plans to introduced Web video functionality into its set-top boxes in January at CES. The company made good on that promise today, though the process isn't quite as simple as accessing sites via your remote.

Only after videos are downloaded to a user's PC will they be transferred to the TiVo via the home network. This is a decided difference from the company's partnerships with Amazon Unbox, Rhapsody, and YouTube, all of which offer direct PC-free accessibility, notes Crave.

To access Web video, you must have a Windows PC ...

Blu-ray Drive Prices High…and Rising

March 13th, 2008

We all saw this one coming, right? In the battle of the next-generation high-definition format, Toshiba's HD DVD's primary selling point was always its relative affordability. Now that HD DVD is out of the running, that whole free-market thing isn't doing much to drive down the price of Blu-ray players. The inevitable march toward disk ubiquity seems to mean that Sony can charge whatever it wants.

As a result, Blu-ray drives are now at the most expensive they've been all year, according to TG Daily. Where competition had driven Blu-ray player prices down to near $300, the ...

Mindware V5 Electric Shocks You into The Game

February 27th, 2008

mindwarev5.jpg

The biggest complaint among today's console and PC gamers? Well, if some peripheral manufacturers are to be believed, it's their inability to experience actual physical damage. A while back, we told you about TN Games, which manufactures a vest that delivers blows to your sternum in sync with the game that you're playing. The company has subsequently developed a helmet that does the same for head blows.

I had the opportunity to test both out at this year's CES, and I have the video evidence to prove it. I'm ...

The Death of HD-DVD and the Art of Backroom Deal Making

February 25th, 2008

Is there more to the end of the format war than meets the eye? In two words: of course.

Anyone who thinks that these things are always decided with over-the-counter capitalism possesses a touch more faith in the system than should perhaps be reasonably expected. These sorts of things are generally decided behind closed doors, with information that only begins to leak out once everything has been neatly wrapped up. Now that Toshiba has officially pulled support for the format for HD DVD, the conspiracy theories can begin.

One of the most notable aspects of this latest format war ...

Microsoft Discontinues HD-DVD Drives

February 25th, 2008

Not that anyone could have realistically expected things to get any better for HD-DVD, ever since Toshiba announced that they were officially dropping support of their hi-def format, but it's still a bit painful to watch manufacturers flee support like rats from a sinking ship.

Microsoft, once one of the format's strongest supporters (if only because its chief competitor, Blu-Ray, was being pushed by the same people who make the Playstation), announced over the weekend they will stop manufacturing external HD-DVD drives for the Xbox 360.

Earlier this month, the company slashed prices ...

Toshiba Officially Pulls Plug on HD-DVD

February 19th, 2008

The new year hasn't exactly been kind to HD-DVD. Toshiba's next-generation format began 2008 with a pre-CES pull out by Warner Bros. Since then, things have gone from bad to worse, most recently with news that Netflix, BestBuy, and Wal-Mart have opted to go strictly with Sony's Blu-Ray when it comes to next generation discs.

Toshiba made things official this morning, by throwing in the hi-def towel, stating that they would no longer manufacture, develop, or market HD-DVD hardware. In the meantime, the company is set to reduce shipments of players and recorders, ceasing the wing of ...
