Since the iPhone made its debut concurrent with CES in January, mobile phone manufacturers and service providers alike have been bracing for the impact. According to a recent Wall Street Journal article, T-Mobile stands to lose 12.5% of its customer base to Cingular when the iPhone comes out a week from tomorrow.
As it so happens, I’m a T-Mobile subscriber, and when I called to find out about canceling my service for the iPhone, I was given a pretty hard time by a pushy sales guy. He told me that they have .mp3 phones available on the T-Mobile network and that I should check one out.
After much poking around, I’m having a pretty bland reaction to most of T-Mobile’s offerings. The only thing that really catches my fancy is the Sidekick. I must admit that it’s pretty damn cool, but even that won’t play songs from the iTunes store, which is where I get 90% of my music these days.
I’ve given it some serious thought, but my mind is made up about the iPhone. Aside from being the coolest piece of technology to come out in a while, it’s the only thing that will play my music AND be my phone.
So I’m getting one.
